Fall Out Boy is a pop punk band formed in 2001 in Glenview, Illinois after good friends Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz met high schooler Patrick Stump. Stump originally auditioned as a drummer, but soon became the lead singer. The following year, the band debuted with a self-released demo and followed it up with the May 28, 2002 release of Split EP, which featured Project Rocket, on Uprising Records. The group released a mini-LP, Evening Out With Your Girlfriend, also on Uprising Records, in 2003.
2003–2004: Independent success
After the release of their mini-album, Fall Out Boy built a large following playing in the Chicago area. Drummer Andy Hurley, formerly of Racetraitor, joined the band, while Mike Pareskuwicz and T.J. Kunasch left. At this time, Stump also took over rhythm guitar duties. After signing to Fueled By Ramen, they released their first full-length album, Take This to Your Grave, on May 6, 2003.
With singles Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy and Saturday receiving video airplay on FUSE and mtvU and radio airplay on alternative stations across the country, the band soon gained a cult following. The album sold very well and eventually achieved gold status, but only after the success of their next album, From Under The Cork Tree.

I grew up (physically and musically) on Fall Out Boy. I didn’t imagine in 2003, after buying TTTYG on a whim [trying to discover unknown punk music, the album cover my favorite color, and named for an obscure Simpsons character], that I’d find the future of punk and rock music. I’d end up buying every magazine that even mentioned Fall Out Boy, but none gave me the background that this book did.
It was teary-eyed nostalgia throughout the entirety of this book, for me. Without even listening to a single note of any of the songs mentioned within, the descriptions of the songs, the videos, the moments, all took me back to the loved experiences of discovering what Fall Out Boy has done next. Popping their debut into my friends car stereo for the first time, receiving From Under the Cork Tree in the Mail, driving out of the Coconuts Music parking lot covered in snow for Infinity on High. The book hits all the peaks and canyons of emotions that tied my own history to the band.
