Sadhus sing, devotees shave for World Peace
On the first day of the mela, as many as 65 sanyasis of Kaupindhari and Bakaldhari samaj were accorded the position of baba' (a kind of promotion after years of dedicated meditation) in the wee hours of Wednesday.The various ranks or positions of ascetics vary in these two communities. According to Kaupindhari samaj, ascetics begin as tyagi sanyasis' and are elevated to the position of Kaupindhari baba' after 8 to 10 years of dedicated sadhana' (tantric meditation). In the Bakaldhari samaj, ascetics begin as bairagi sanyasis' and go on to become Kaupindhari baba' after five-eight years. After 20 years of sadhana' and significant godly service, they are elevated to the position of Bakaldhari baba'.
