Sir (Emil Hugo Oscar) Robert Ropner, 1st Baronet (16th December 1838 – 26th February 1924) a German-British shipbuilder, shipowner. Emil Hugo (Robert) Ropner was the son of John Henry Ropner of Magdeburg, Prussia. As a child in Germany the young Robert avidly read books about the sea and seafaring, these fed his dreams of ocean travel, even though he had never seen the sea. His dreams were however to be shattered; after travelling to Hamburg and stowing away on a British ship the young Robert Ropner suffered through a rough journey to West Hartlepool in the North East of England, this put paid to all his ideas of a life at sea. He settled in England, finding a job and a wife. As an ambitious young man working for a firm of coal exporters, he very soon understood that if he and his partners where to make any real money they needed to own their own ships. In 1868 the ‘Amy’ was built by a local shipyard the first of a growing fleet. Ropner used his German origins to build the business by trading with ports around the Baltic. Sir (Emil Hugo Oscar) Robert Ropner, 1st Baronet (born Röpner; 16 December 1838 – 26 February 1924) was a German-British shipbuilder, shipowner, and ConservativeMember of Parliament.
Career
[edit]Ropner was born in 1838 in Magdeburg, Province of Saxony, Kingdom of Prussia, the son of Johann Heinrich Röpner and Johanne Christiane Emilie Bessel.[1][2] He emigrated to England and worked for a coal export concern before building up a fleet of colliers and founding the Ropner Shipping Company in Hartlepool in 1874.[3]
In 1888, Robert Ropner acquired a shipyard at Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham. Ropner established a successful shipbuilding firm, which built many trunk deck ships.[4] No longer limited to hauling coal, Ropner also established a company to operate tramp steamers. Although the shipyard went into liquidation soon after what was then known as the Great War,[5] the shipping company continued to operate through both World Wars, despite heavy wartime losses of vessels.[4]
Robert Ropner served as High Sheriff of Durham in 1896 and from 1900 to 1910 represented the constituency of Stockton-on-Tees in the House of Commons. He was President of the UK Chamber of Shippi
